How long do pvc ball valves last?

PVC ball valves have a service life of 5 to 20 years. This service life is affected by a variety of factors, including the quality of the valve, usage conditions and maintenance.

Factors Influencing Lifespan

Chemical Compatibility: Exposure to chemicals that are not compatible with PVC can significantly reduce the valve’s lifespan by causing corrosion, cracking, or degradation of the material.

Pressure and Temperature: Operating the valve within its pressure and temperature ratings is crucial. Exceeding these limits can lead to valve failure due to material deformation or breakdown.

UV Exposure: PVC can degrade under prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, leading to embrittlement and cracking. Valves installed outdoors without UV protection have a shorter lifespan.

Impurities: Too much impurity in the fluid allows sediment to build up and the ball inside the valve may stick in one place. This can make the valve difficult to turn or not function.

Manufacturing Quality: The quality and precision of the manufacturing process can significantly affect the service life of the valve. A high-quality valve with smooth surfaces and a precise fit between components is likely to last longer than a lower-quality valve.

Mechanical stress: Mechanical stress, such as that caused by vibration, shock, or excessive torque during operation, can shorten the service life of PVC ball valves. Proper installation and operation can mitigate these effects.

Frequency of Use: Valves that are cycled (opened and closed) frequently may wear out faster than those used infrequently. However, valves not operated for long periods can also seize up or become difficult to operate, potentially reducing their useful life.

Installation and Maintenance: Proper installation without over-tightening, along with regular maintenance, can extend a valve’s life. Incorrect installation can induce stress on the valve, leading to early failure.

By considering these factors, it is possible to select a PVC ball valve that will perform effectively throughout its expected service life. In addition, proper installation, use within regulations, and regular maintenance help ensure that the valve lasts as long as possible.

A comprehensive guide to CPVC and PVC pipes

CPVC is a variation of PVC derived from the chlorination of PVC, in which additional chlorine atoms are chemically bonded to the polymer chain. This chlorination process increases the chlorine content of the material. CPVC has stronger high-temperature resistance, pressure resistance, and corrosion resistance than PVC.
