Pressure Unit Conversion: kPa, MPa, Bar, PSI, and kg/cm² Explained Pressure conversion is essential for valve selection, pipe sizing, and system design. Different regions use different units — metric and imperial — and accurate conversion ensures safety and compatibility in international projects.

Pressure Units: Essential for Valve and Pipe Systems

Pressure is a critical parameter in the design, application, and specification of valve and pipe fitting systems. Due to varying global standards, understanding and converting between metric and imperial units is essential for effective international trade and unified specifications.

Metric Units: kPa, MPa, and Bar

The fundamental metric unit of pressure is the Pascal (Pa), defined as the vertical force of 1 Newton (N) acting over an area of 1 square meter (m²), expressed as:

1 Pa = 1 N / m²

While pressure is often mistaken for force, it is actually defined as force per unit area.

Commonly used metric units are derived from the Pascal:

  • Kilopascal (kPa): 1 kPa = 10³ Pa
  • Megapascal (MPa): 1 MPa = 10⁶ Pa
  • Bar: 1 bar = 10⁵ Pa

The metric units used in piping systems are kPa, MPa, and bar. The imperial unit is PSI (pound per square inch), widely used in the United States. The kg/cm² unit is still used in Asia, particularly in valve and pipeline specifications.

Imperial Unit: Pounds per Square Inch (Psi)

The primary imperial unit is pounds per square inch ($\text{psi}$), which signifies one pound of force acting on an area of one square inch.

In day-to-day operations, the conversions most frequently used are those between psi and bar, and between bar and MPa:

1 psi ≈ 0.0689 bar
1 MPa = 10 bar

The Colloquial “Kilogram” (kg) Pressure Unit

The term kilogram (kg) is occasionally used colloquially as a unit of pressure, though it is technically a unit of mass. In this context, it represents the pressure exerted by a 1-kilogram force acting on an area of 1 square centimeter (cm²).

Conveniently, this value is approximately equal to 1 bar:

1 kg (pressure) ≈ 10⁵ Pa = 1 bar

This unit, often written as kg/cm², is still widely found in specifications across Asia, particularly in older technical documents and valve system ratings.

Nominal Pressure (PN)

In valve and piping systems, a key specification is the Nominal Pressure (PN). This parameter indicates the maximum working pressure of a component under standard conditions, and its designated unit is the Megapascal (MPa).

Typical PN ratings include PN10, PN16, and PN25, corresponding to 1.0 MPa, 1.6 MPa, and 2.5 MPa respectively.
