What Does DN Mean in Pipes? DN Size and Outside Diameter Chart

DN in pipes often causes confusion because the number looks like a millimeter measurement. Buyers may assume that DN50 means an inside or outside diameter of exactly 50 mm. That assumption can lead to mismatched valves, fittings, and pipes. I use DN as a nominal size and verify actual dimensions against the relevant standard.

DN means “nominal diameter,” based on the term diamètre nominal. It is a standardized, dimensionless pipe-size designation rather than a measured diameter. DN50 identifies a nominal size class, but the actual inside diameter and outside diameter depend on the pipe standard, material, wall thickness, and pressure or schedule rating.

DN in pipes nominal diameter and actual pipe dimensions

A DN size therefore provides a common language for system design and component selection. However, it does not provide enough information for purchasing. I always check the dimensional standard, outside diameter, wall thickness, connection type, and pressure class before confirming compatibility.

What Does DN Mean in Pipes?

Many buyers see “DN” on a valve body or data sheet and treat it as an exact physical dimension. The problem becomes serious when a DN50 valve must connect to pipes manufactured under different standards. A clear understanding of the designation helps buyers avoid expensive adapters, delays, and replacements.

DN in pipes is a nominal designation used to classify related piping components. ISO 6708 defines DN as an alphanumeric size designation for reference purposes.1 The number after DN is dimensionless, although it usually corresponds approximately to a bore size in millimeters. It is not a direct measurement.

DN Is Neither the Inside Diameter nor the Outside Diameter

DN is commonly expanded as Diameter Nominal or translated as nominal diameter. For example:

  • DN50 represents nominal size 50.
  • DN100 represents nominal size 100.
  • DN150 represents nominal size 150.

The designation simplifies the matching of pipes, valves, flanges, and fittings within a defined standards system. ISO 6708 and China’s GB/T 1047 treat DN as a reference number rather than a unit-based measurement.2

Older low-pressure pipes sometimes had an inside diameter close to their nominal size.3 Modern systems use many materials and pressure classes, so that relationship is no longer reliable. A thicker wall reduces the bore without necessarily changing the outside diameter.

For example, ASME B36.10M lists a nominal DN50/NPS 2 steel pipe with an outside diameter of 60.3 mm:4

Nominal sizeScheduleOutside diameterApproximate inside diameter
DN50 / NPS 2Sch 4060.3 mm52.5 mm
DN50 / NPS 2Sch 8060.3 mm49.3 mm

The outside diameter remains fixed in this example, but the thicker Schedule 80 wall reduces the flow area. Exact values should always be checked against the current standard and the manufacturer’s declared tolerances.

Plastic piping creates another layer of complexity. PVC-U, CPVC, PP, PPR, PPH, and PVDF systems can follow different dimensional series.5 Some product catalogs use DN, while others emphasize the actual outside diameter with a lowercase d, such as d50 or d63.

I never approve a plastic valve or fitting from the DN marking alone. I ask which standard and dimensional series apply.

A DN50 steel component and a plastic component marketed as DN50 may not share the same outside diameter. Buyers should also distinguish DN50 from d50. DN50 is nominal; d50 normally indicates an actual 50 mm outside diameter, subject to tolerance.

How Does DN Compare With Pipe Outside Diameter?

A DN-to-diameter chart looks simple, but a universal chart does not exist for every material. Steel pipe commonly follows established DN/NPS relationships, while thermoplastic pipe dimensions depend on standards such as ISO, DIN, ASTM, BS, or JIS. Buyers need a chart tied to the correct product specification.

DN does not convert to one universal outside diameter. For ASME steel pipe, DN50 corresponds to an outside diameter of 60.3 mm, and DN100 corresponds to 114.3 mm. Plastic pipe may use different outside diameters for similar nominal designations, so buyers must identify the material and governing standard first.

The following chart shows common ASME steel pipe relationships.6 I use it as a reference, not as a universal chart for PVC or other plastic systems.

What Should Buyers Check Besides DN?

I recommend checking at least six details when sourcing pipes, valves, or fittings:

  1. Material: PVC-U, CPVC, PP, PPR, PPH, PVDF, steel, or another material.
  2. Product standard: DIN, ANSI/ASTM, BS, JIS, ISO, or a project-specific standard.
  3. Actual outside diameter: This dimension determines whether sockets, unions, and mechanical connections fit.
  4. Wall thickness: Schedule, SDR, or S-series values affect the bore and pressure capability.
  5. Pressure class: Common markings include PN10, PN16, Sch 40, and Sch 80.
  6. Connection method: Solvent socket, threaded, flanged, butt fusion, or socket fusion connections are not automatically interchangeable.

For plastic valves and fittings, I also review dimensional drawings and request sample fitting checks when a project combines products from several suppliers. Matching DN and pressure ratings do not guarantee matching socket depths, thread forms, flange drilling, or sealing geometry.

In our manufacturing context, we produce plastic valves and fittings in PVC, CPVC, UPVC, PP, PPR, PPH, and PVDF across several international standards. We state that we use virgin material and perform 100% pressure testing, but buyers should still verify inspection records, technical drawings, and current certification documents such as ISO 9001, CE, REACH, SGS, or BV reports. An engineer should confirm material compatibility and pressure suitability for each application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DN measured in millimeters?

No. DN is a dimensionless nominal designation. The number is broadly associated with metric sizing, but DN50 does not mean that the pipe measures exactly 50 mm inside or outside. Buyers need the applicable standard to determine physical dimensions.

Are DN50 and 2-inch pipe the same?

DN50 and NPS 2 are corresponding nominal designations in common steel-pipe systems. However, a 2-inch steel pipe has an outside diameter of approximately 60.3 mm. Plastic “2-inch” and DN50 products can follow different dimensional standards.

Does pipe schedule change the outside diameter?

A schedule change usually does not change the outside diameter of ASME steel pipe at the same nominal size. It changes the wall thickness and inside diameter. Plastic systems may use SDR, S-series, or pressure-class rules instead, so buyers should consult the specific standard.

What is the difference between DN and PN?

DN identifies a nominal size, while PN identifies a nominal pressure class under applicable standards. For example, DN100 PN10 describes a nominal size 100 component with a nominal pressure designation of 10 bar under defined reference conditions.

Can valves with the same DN always connect?

No. Two valves with the same DN can use different socket dimensions, flange drilling, threads, or joining methods. I recommend comparing standards, drawings, outside diameters, pressure classes, and connection details before ordering.

Conclusion

DN in pipes is a nominal reference size, not an actual inside or outside diameter. A correct purchasing decision requires the material, dimensional standard, wall thickness, pressure rating, and connection method. The outside diameter chart above is useful for common steel pipe, but it should not be applied automatically to plastic systems. If you are sourcing PVC, CPVC, PP, PPR, PPH, or PVDF valves and fittings, contact us with your pipe standard, size range, pressure class, and drawings for a technical compatibility review.

  6. "Nominal Pipe Size", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nominal_Pipe_Size. The outside diameters shown for NPS 1/2 through NPS 12 are consistent with the standardized steel-pipe dimensions tabulated in ASME B36.10M; the paired DN values are conventional corresponding nominal designations. Evidence role: statistic; source type: institution. Supports: The listed NPS designations and standardized outside diameters for common steel-pipe sizes.. Scope note: DN and NPS are corresponding designation systems, not mathematical unit conversions, and the table should not be generalized to unrelated plastic-pipe standards. ↩
